NEW YORK - Right alongside the latest fashions from France and Italy, an elaborate gown from Australia is front and centre in the windows of luxury retailer Bergdorf Goodman this week after appearing on the cover of Vogue.
Make that "Australia": The epic film starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman that will be in theatres this fall. The plot is driven by a massive cattle drive across the Outback.
A firebird organza gown is among the period costumes for the movie, set just after the Pearl Harbor bombing during the Second World War. In the movie, the gown is red; at Bergdorf's and on the July cover of Vogue, it's a green version, also created by costume designer Catherine Martin,
Four recreations of the governor's ball dress will available for sale for US$9,850, marking the first time Martin has offered her designs at retail.
"Film has such a growing impact on fashion and style inspiration," says Linda Fargo, Bergdorf senior vice-president. "But it's not often that one can literally buy what you see a style icon like Nicole Kidman wearing in a movie."
Actually there will be at least one other opportunity for "Australia"-style luxury fashion. Salvatore Ferragamo, which worked with Martin and Kidman to develop a full accessories wardrobe for the film, will add a version of the strappy velvet shoe Kidman's character wears with the gown to its holiday collection.
The company decided against offering the exact same shoe because tastes were different in the 1940s, with women preferring shorter, chunkier heels than the modern black-tie stiletto.
Salvatore Ferragamo began his career working in costume design, and his brand has partnered on films including "The Seven Year Itch," "The Devil Wears Prada" and the upcoming "Confessions of a Shopaholic."
U2 have confirmed the re-releases of their first three albums this Summer, all of which will include extra rarities and unreleased material.
'Boy', 'War' and 'October' are released next month as two different formats - a single CD, or deluxe 2CD set - both are remastered.
Of the extra bonus material, 'Boy' will include new U2 songs 'Speed Of Life', 'Saturday Night', 'Cartoon World' and a new mix of 'I Will Follow'. As well as live versions of 'Boy-Girl', '11 O'Clocl Tick Tock', recorded at London Marquee.
'October' will boast live tracks recorded at London's Hammersmith Palais and Boston's Paradise Theatre, plus a live BBC session.
'War' sees new song 'Angels Too Tied To The Ground', being backed by remixes of 'New Year's Day' and 'Two Hearts Beat As One'.
U2 continue to work on their next studio album proper, expected for release in early 2009.
Radiohead will use their concert in Glasgow tonight (June 27th) to urge fans to support the Climate Change bill.
Fans will be asked before the gig to sign postcards that will then be delivered to Alex Salmond, Scotland's first minister.
It's hoped that the signatures will lobby politicians into introducing the Climate Change Bill which, in Scotland, is calling for a limit on the total of all emissions released between now and 2050.
Tonight's initiative has been organised by Friends of the Earth's Big Ask campaign.
Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, who is an ambassador for the cause, said the band hoped to “encourage” fans to help tackle climate change.
"It's time our politicians play their part as they are the only ones who can put the structures in place that will help us.
"That's why I am supporting the Big Ask Scotland and asking anyone who cares about climate change to support it too,” he said.
Radiohead's current world tour is taking place under strict eco-friendly guidelines which the band have extended to fans who travel to their gigs.
